Founded in 2005, the Center for Human and Economic Development Studies (CHEDS) is a non-profit research institution based at School of Economics, Peking University. It is the first such academic institution established specifically to undertake systematic and in-depth interdisciplinary research on human development in China.
THE MISSION The mission of the Center is to promote human development research and, ultimately, to help achieve the goal of “People-Centered” development in China, with a special concern for the most vulnerable.
ACTIVITIES
Supported by external funds, CHEDS currently undertakes five major areas of activities including research, networking, training, pilot experimental projects, and policy consultation.
Research: Research constitutes a principal area of CHEDS activities. CHEDS distinguishes itself from other research institutions by taking a leading role in pursuing interdisciplinary approaches and collaborations in both theoretical and empirical research. Currently, we are undertaking or have initiated following collaborative research projects: ◆ Human development in China: The case of Wujiang County ◆ The impact of pesticide use on the health of female farmers ◆ Financing the environmental infrastructure of small towns ◆ Public governance in the environmental management of river basins ◆ Educational equity in China ◆ The impact of female education on children’s nutritional improvements
Networking: CHEDS aims to establish an inter-disciplinary, wide-ranging research network for undertaking and promoting human development studies in China, involving both academic researchers and policy makers from across disciplines in China and abroad. Specific activates include: ◆ A seminar series on human development, held once every two weeks ◆ A series of 8 theme-focused workshops in 5 years, covering the eight main dimensions of human development
Training Program: Our training program will provide class teaching, discussion forums, meetings and workshops on the wide subject area of human development. Participants will primarily be researchers, university teachers, and government officials. The central goal of the training program is to provide both academics and policy makers with a thorough understanding of the human development perspective. ◆ A training program for researchers, especially those from western China ◆ A training program for government officials at various levels
Pilot Experimental Projects: To promote wider applications of the human development perspective in China, CHEDS will actively involve itself in pilot experimental projects. Currently, we are undertaking such projects in both the more developed and less developed regions of China: ◆ The survival and development of migrant women in Wujiang County ◆ An intervention plan to reduce endemic diseases in North-West China
Policy Consultation: Through promoting inter-disciplinary research and collaboration, CHEDS aims to provide a concerted channel of policy advice to government departments that integrates views and findings from across disciplines on major social and economic issues, including: ◆ Advocating a paradigmatic shift in the official thinking about the means and ends of development towards the human development perspective ◆ Specific policy advices on human development related issues ◆ A closer involvement of government officials in related policy studies, integrating policy advice with feedbacks from policy makers on issues and implementation
